Hamburg St. Pauli Elbtunnel (#2897)

Hamburg St. Pauli Elbtunnel (#2897)
St. Pauli Elbtunnel, Europe's oldest underwater tunnel, built in 1911. It's an amazing construction, not at all like a conventional auto tunnel. Cars (or horses and carriages in the past) drive on to lifts seen here and are lowered to the tunnels, and then raised on the other end. The tunnels are still in use, open around the clock to cyclists and pedestrians, and during commute hours to cars. Note that the main traffic route across the harbor is now by a newer tunnel west of this. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elbe_Tunnel_(1911)

That's a fascinating design concept, though I understand why it didn't catch on.
