Aboard northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner in area of Point Conception. A very narrow point that seemed to be some sort of military installation

Arcata Theater, Arcata, CA 1164z

I'm increasingly finding the architecture of older movie theatres to be rather interesting. The signs somehow convey a sense of elegance even at small town theatres, and I wonder if the use of vertical signage was intended to mimic how towers are used on governmental, educational, and religious buildings to suggest 'rising above' ordinary life.
Arcata, CA

|
Arcata has a history of being dominated by farming and the lumber industry, but also as the home of Humboldt State University. As the other industries have faded, it primarily feels like a very pleasant, small little college town (Humboldt State only has 7,000 students). This is one of the two main streets in Arcata, on a Sunday evening.

Bradley Union Pacific bridge (0938)

Union Pacific railroad bridge over the Salinas River, just south of Bradley, Ca. Note the new railroad ties next to the tracks. The Union Pacific is upgrading the tracks in preparation for a very large increase in shipments of oil, on 100 car oil tanker trains, from the North Dakota oil fields to a refinery near San Luis Obispo.

Bradley UP: Camp Roberts rail yard (0938)
|
|
An abandoned rail yard adjacent to the Union Pacific tracks, just south of Bradley. Considering its location, this had to have been the switching yard for freight being delivered to Camp Roberts. Camp Roberts was a key Army training site during WWII and the Korean War, and subsequently was (and is) a Calif National Guard post. (http://www.militarymuseum.org/campbob.html)

Propery for sale In the community of Hales Grove. I couldn't quite figure out what the property had been, looks like it might have been some type of lodging. Hales Grove is on California route 1, as it climbs up from the coast to merge with US 101.
