Buses Festival - 8 Aug 2021

Sunday 8 August 2021 – The ‘Buses Festival’ rally held at the East of England Showground, Peterborough. Some of the trophies on display which would be awarded to successful entrants later in the day. The rally was organised by Key Publishing, the publishers of ‘Buses’ magazine - a magazine I have bought every month since June 1962 although back then it was called ‘Buses Illustrated’ and published by Ian Allan. I retained all the copies until quite recently (May 2021) when I donated them to the ‘Bus Archive’. www.busarchive.org.uk That is over 700 issues!

Preserved former Carris 255 (GB-21-07) is a Weymann bodied AEC Regent III new in 1954. A classic English bus in a mirror image which operates in the UK on registration number KSV 102.

Alongside, in the more familiar British right hand drive layout, are preserved former London Transport Routemaster RM2180 (CUV 180C) and RT4317 (NLE 981).

A classic English bus in a mirror image which carries British registration number KSV 102.

Sunday 8 August 2021 – The ‘Buses Festival’ rally held at the East of England Showground, Peterborough. Preserved former Alexander Northern NPE90 (GSO 90V), an Alexander Y type bodied Leyland Leopard built in 1979 and registered for service in January 1980. The ‘Bluebird’ name had originated before the Alexander empire was split up. Whilst this seemed quite at home on Midland’s blue vehicles it was a little out of place on Fife’s red and Northern’s yellow vehicles. Stagecoach still uses the name today.

Stagecoach London 12345 (SN64 OGU), an Alexander Dennis Enviro400H hybrid new in September 2014. Named ‘Selkent Ambassador’ it carries a retro colour scheme based on the livery used by the erstwhile London General Omnibus Company. A livery which wouldn’t go amiss today. Great fleet number too! This bus was the winner of the best modern double decker trophy at the rally.

Stagecoach London 12345 (SN64 OGU), an Alexander Dennis Enviro400H hybrid new in September 2014. Named ‘Selkent Ambassador’ it carries a retro colour scheme based on the livery used by the erstwhile London General Omnibus Company. A livery which wouldn’t go amiss today. Great fleet number too! Thorne’s Independent Coaches of Hemingborough near Selby operate OKP 980 preserved as Maidstone & District Motor Services CO252. It has Beadle bodywork mounted on Leyland mechanical running units taken from a pre-World War 2 Leyland TD7. The re-built vehicle entered service in this form with M&D in March 1952.

Two vehicles entered in the event operated by Thorne’s Independent Coaches of Hemingborough near Selby. Left is KVY 789N is a Duple Dominant bodied Bedford YRQ that was new in May 1975 to Gorwood Coaches of East Cottingwith, a business taken over by Thornes Independent. Sunday 8 August 2021 – The ‘Buses Festival’ rally held at the East of England Showground, Peterborough. There were just three vehicles parked under cover in the main hall. National Express West Midlands E024 (LD20 PTZ), an Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV City bodied BYD Electric bus new in August 2020. Named Linda it is branded for operation on service 9/9A in Coventry.
