East Yorkshire Scarborough and District 607 (NCN 107L) in Scarborough – 19 Aug 1987 (54-20)

East Yorkshire Scarborough and District 607 (NCN 107L) in Scarborough – 19 Aug 1987 (54-20)
Wednesday 19 August 1987 – In September 1986 when under National Bus Company ownership the southern part of the United Automobile Services operating area along with the garages at Scarborough and Pickering were transferred to East Yorkshire Motor Services which created a new subsidiary named Scarborough and District.

The seafront service which links the North Bay and South Bay had its origins with, and was operated exclusively by, United from the early days but after deregulation a number of other operators provided competition on the route.

Two garish EYMS/S&D open toppers were seen at the North Bay terminus.

Left is 607 (NCN 107L) is an Eastern Coachworks bodied Leyland Atlantean PDR1A/1 that had been new to Gateshead and District as their 107L in October 1972 which advertises the Kinderland Children’s Park.

Right is a former Selnec or Greater Manchester Leyland Atlantean which advertises the Water Splash Park, the modern day name for what was originally the North Bay Bathing Pool. Opened in the summer of 1938 the pool had a continental feel with underwater lighting and elevated arched terraces facing the south. From the 1980s until its closure around 2007 it was a succession of different water parks. The complex was demolished and the empty site is awaiting redevelopment.

Scarborough Castle stands high on the headland separating to two bays. Built in the 12th century, one side of the castle’s Great Keep was sheered away by Parliamentarian heavy cannon in 1645.
