Hardwick's Services MUM 275 in Scarborough circa 1967

Scarborough 1967-2012

Folder: Buses, coaches, trams by place/area (UK)
Scarborough was my father's hometown and throughout my childhood all my summer holidays were spent there when we visited Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles etc. Unfortunately, I didn't take any photographs at that time something which I have always regretted. This album features photographs taken on later visits starting around 1967.

Hardwick's Services MUM 275 seen in Northway Bus Station, Scarborough - the bus station owned by the West Yorkshire Road Car Company. For a number of years the company's departure point in Scarborough was Newham's Garage in Victoria Road until it moved to Northway. The Hardwick's business was acquired by Wallace Arnold Tours in 1952 and operated from Scarborough via Snainton (where the garage was) to Ebberston. On market days the service continued via Yedingham to Malton. MUM 275 was a new as a Wallace Arnold coach fitted with a Wilks and Meade single deck coach body and was subsequently rebodied as a double decker by Charles Roe of Leeds. A picture of it as a coach may be seen at: www.flickr.com/photos/78828987@N05/7490728576/in/photolist-

Circa 1967 – East Yorkshire Motor Services 775 (CKH 775C), a Park Royal bodied AEC Renown new in March 1965, seen at Westwood bus station in Scarborough. Westwood was a charming little bus station that had a large coach park alongside, some coaches can the background. The whole bus station and coach park site is now occupied by a Tesco store and its car park.

Photo by R H G Simpson of Oxford from whom I bought a number of period photographs in the 1960s. East Yorkshire Motor Services 670 (VKH 670) is seen prior to departing on service 10 from Westwood Bus Station in Scarborough to Flamborough North Landing. I couldn't resist including this photograph as it features my Great Aunt Florrie who is visible through the window below the nearside driver's mirror. She would be returning home to Cayton Village after shopping or such. I also include the photograph because it was no doubt one of the buses I had travelled on when visiting her and her sister, Annie, visits I always enjoyed. The magnificent dark blue, cream and white livery of EYMS buses and the visit out to Cayton, then a rural village which has now almost become a suburb of Scarborough, always brings back pleasant memories for me. As a schoolboy my Dad, born and raised in Scarborough in the 1920s, used to make the journey to stay with his Aunties Annie and Florrie for his annual holiday - all of a 3 mile bus ride! He recalled travelling by what was an independent operator at some point. United Automobile Services also ran a service between Scarborough and Cayton Village (service 111) but my two Great Aunts would only use it when absolutely necessary - they were staunch supporters of East Yorkshire and their service 10. Service 10 operated between Scarborough and Hunmanby via Cayton Village and Filey. In the early 1960s a summer only extension to Flamborough (North Landing) was introduced and 670 carries a window sign for that destination. The Park Royal bodied Leyland Tiger Cub was new in 1957 and left the fleet 11 years later. (Since it is not possible on Ipernity to omit the date a photograph was taken (to the right of the photograph), the date shown above has to be supposition otherwise the date taken would appear as the same date I uploaded the photograph (January 28 2015). That would appear very inaccurate and rather strange indeed).

Friday 12 August 1994 (approx. 1715) – East Yorkshire Motor Services 533 (B533 WAT), an Eastern Coachworks bodied Leyland Olympian new in February 1985 (fitted with high back semi-coach type seating). It was seen loading in Somerset Terrace, Scarborough ready to work the 1725 service 121 to Hull travelling via Filey, Bridlington, Driffield and Beverley, a journey of just over 50 miles. The scheduled arrival time was 2016. In the background is United 4021 (L421 FHN), an Optare Delta bodied DAF new in August 1993, that was loading for the evening return of ‘Seaside Flyer’ service X62 to Esh Winning (County Durham) – that journey being about 80 miles. I believe this was a day trip type service operating into Scarborough around mid-day returning in the late afternoon.

Friday 12 August 1994 (approx. 1145) – East Yorkshire Motor Services 533 (B533 WAT), an Eastern Coachworks bodied Leyland Olympian new in February 1985 (fitted with high back semi-coach type seating). It was seen on Main Street in Cayton Village when working the 1125 service 121 from Scarborough to Hull. My paternal grandmother came from Cayton and we were on a rare family visit to see other relations there - my first visit to the village for a good few years. I was disappointed that the road surface was in course of renewal which prevented some more photogenic and memorable shots. As a boy (late 1950s/early 1960s) we would visit my Great Aunts who lived in a house just behind the camera and here I would watch the handsome dark blue East Yorkshire Motor Services buses (and the Tilling red United Automobile Services buses) go past.
