Cowslips behind the wire (HFF everyone)

Cowslips behind the wire (HFF everyone)
HFF 13/2/2022

The location is the site of the now partially closed Forestry England, Wykeham Nursery. Although some of the buildings are still in use, the production of sapling trees from seedlings has ceased. A small number of staff have been retained for other forestry work. I shall miss watching the process of preparing the ground, planting out the seedling and eventually gathering up the saplings for distribution to various forestry plantations around the north of England and south of Scotland.

RHH, Fred Fouarge, Frans Schols, Erhard Bernstein and 13 other people have particularly liked this photo

A tall fence and delightful cowslips in a superb image, Doug,
The partial closing is a shame, cost grounds, I suppose

Much appreciate your kind comment Roger. You hit the nail on the head, economics was the reason given.

I wouldn't have thought something like this place, that is doing such good work in producing and planting much needed trees, would partially close down! So nice to see the cowslips along the bank and the PiP is superb Doug.

HFF and wish you a good weekend,
Rosa.

Thanks so much for your visit and kind words Rosa. Forestry England have decided that it is more economic to grow the seedling indoors elsewhere, hence the closure of the nursery here in Wykeham. The lads who worked here were a good bunch, always a cheery wave and sometimes a chat when passing the fields with the dogs.

Thanks very much for your visit Pam. I have never seen so many together before! I was told by one of the Forestry employees that they were not planted, so have established themselves naturedly.

What a beautiful sight and the close up of the cowslips in the PiP is superb Doug.
It seems a real shame that the nursery is partially closed, and I imagine the rest of it will eventually go the same way which will be sad. They will probably find it to be not economically viable to keep on a big site. I hope the rest of the staff have found employment elsewhere

Thanks for your Carol.

The nursey itself is fully closed, the only work the very few Forestry employees are doing is in the forest itself. The land that the nursey is on, is I think, owned by a local estate. I have no idea what will happen to it, perhaps used for agriculture or forestry, who knows. How about a native species woodland to help with climate chance!
