Saltwick Nab - Scene of a 1914 maritime tragedy

Saltwick Nab - Scene of a 1914 maritime tragedy
The wreck of HMHS Rohilla

Rohilla (steamship) grounded 1914 (2)

HMHS Rohilla, also referred to as SS Rohilla, ran aground in October 1914 near Whitby during terrible weather conditions.

The hospital ship, carrying 229 people, was on its way to Dunkirk to pick up injured soldiers when tragedy struck.

Six lifeboats attempted to rescue people from the wreck over a stormy three-day period but 83 people sadly lost their lives. However, thanks to the brave efforts of the lifeboat crews, coastguards and local men and women 146 people were saved.

The link below gives a more comprehensive record of the disaster and rescue attempts:

Thanks very much for your kind comment Udo. Probably one of the worst shipwreaks on this coast in modern times.

My usual view of the Nab is from sea level, so I like this image.

And sometimes that view is from the deck of "William Riley of Birmingham & Leamington" - the pulling Lifeboat (from Upgang) that was lowered down the cliff by the Abbey. Her crews made repeated attempts to get close enough, the gale and tide made that impossible, despite the heroic efforts.

I think the caption on the image of the wrecked Rohilla is not quite correct. To me, it looks more like the men are preparing to relaunch a lifeboat, as they are handling a rope rather than a rocket line. The lifeboat was probably the "William Riley" ...

A beautiful coastline and superb shot Doug.

What a sad story. A terrible loss of life and for the 146 saved the memories must have stayed with them. It must have been a remarkable effort that saved them.

Best wishes Doug

If I may supply some more information ?

The nurses* were taken off by one of Whitby's pulling lifeboats. [*One of whom had been on the RMS Titanic].

A number of the men jumped overboard, to try swimming ashore and survived (a lot didn't, either drowning or from hypothermia).

The majority were saved by Tynemouth's Motor Lifeboat (40 hp petrol engine, crewed by militia) that came down overnight after being summoned by telegram.
Last man off was the Captain, with the ship's cat under his coat.

Thanks so much for your visit and very kind comment Carol. What impresses me most of all is that it was a community effort not just the members of the RNLI.
