View east from the West Front & Nave towards North Transept and Presbytery

View east from the West Front & Nave towards North Transept and Presbytery
Perhaps better enlarged

Much of the nave of the Abbey collapsed in 1762, although enough remains standing to demonstrate its scale and plan. This Gothic building replaced an earlier Romanesque nave from the early 12th century. The north wall of the nave (shown here) has three simple 13th century lancet windows, the two remaining windows date from the 14th century and are much larger with elaborate tracery.

The nave at Whitby is not exactly aligned with the presbytery and transepts, in fact, it is misaligned by about four degrees. There is no parallel to this in any other major English medieval church.

Good information in the PiP's Doug. Astonishing to think there were so many alterations over its history. Even as a ruin it is very atmospheric and beautiful sitting high above the town. I am really enjoying this series of excellent pictures.

Best wishes, Rosa.

Many thanks for your very kind appreciation Rosa. I get the impression (reading the history of the place) that various bishops, whilst trying to impress their god, were also indulging in a little bit of 'my church is better than yours'... Certainly a lot of time and money was spent increasing the size and splendor of the building.

Lovely set of photo's Doug... the scaffolding they used, must have been a test of their nerves... yet the stone masons produced such marvels..

Your visit and kind comments are very welcome John, thank you.

Even after all the years it has stood on the headland the quality of the stonework is clear to see. I'd love to have seen it before time and the weather eroded the fabric of the building to what it is today. It must have been quite a sight.

beautiful place an picture.
Interesting that this is the only church with that misalignment between nave and presbyterium.
On the continent many churches show this misalignment - it has got even a wikipedia entry ;-)

It is bothering if you try to make an exact shoot through nave and presbyterium ;-)

Thanks very much for your kind words Boarischa. Your information and link is very interesting, thanks for that. Whitby Abbey church, as with many churches and cathedrals built in England at that time, were based upon the design of those built in France. I'm guessing the builders of the abbey church were good pupils of the 'French school of church building' ;-)))
