Segelfalter: einer der schönsten Tagfalter - Scarce swallowtail: one of the most beautiful butterflies

The scarce swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) is a heat-loving day butterfly that prefers sunny, warm habitats. It can therefore only be found on dry rough grasslands or in rocky areas with bushes. Areas with vineyards and bushes are often its biotopes. It is important that stunted blackthorn bushes are present, because the leaves of these plants are preferred food plants of the caterpillars.
As I have observed myself on walks in Italy, the scarce swallowtail can sail through the air for several minutes without flapping its wings, taking advantage of thermals. On some hills, you can sometimes find a large number of gliding butterflies (hilltopping).
Due to habitat loss, the scarce swallowtail is quite rare and is considered endangered according to the German Red List .
The photo was taken in a Franconian protected area and shows a relatively freshly hatched individual, possibly a male (slightly smaller than female).
