Die letzte Sonnenwärme nutzt dieses Pfauenauge (Aglais io), um nach der Überwinterung noch möglichst viel Energie in Form von zuckerhaltigem Nektar zu tanken. Es steht ja auch noch die anstrengende Paarungszeit bevor! Noch der Paarung und Eiablage der Weibchen ist der Lebenszyklus dieser Generation beendet und sie sterben. Aus den gelegten Eiern schlüpfen Raupen, die eine neue Pfauenaugen-Generation begründen. Der Falter im Bild sitzt auf einem Blütenstand vom Winter-Schneeball.

This European peacock (Aglais io) is using the last of the sun's warmth to stock up as much energy as possible in the form of sugary nectar after hibernation. After all, the strenuous mating season is still to come! After mating and egg-laying, the life cycle of this generation is over and the butterflies die. The laid eggs hatch into caterpillars, which establish a new generation of butterflies. The butterfly in the photo is sitting on an inflorescence of the Bodnant viburnum.
