Ein Bienenwolf - A very hairy beetle

The small (nearly 1,5 cm) and exceptionally beautifully colored beetle Trichodes alvearius has larvae that feed predatorily on the larvae and pupae of wild bees and sphecoid wasps in their nests. Therefore, the beetle is also called "bee wolf". The beetle likes to sit on flowers where it hunts small insects or eats pollen. The body and especially the head are shaggy "hairy". The population of this beetle species is endangered, therefore it is also on the Red List Germany. The picture was taken at the river Main near Randersacker, the beetle is sitting on a white flower of the White Campion (Melandrium album).
