The ferry Fahr is a free passenger, cyclist and car ferry on the river Main that runs all year round between Fahr in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen and Kaltenhausen in the district of Würzburg. The ferry is the only free-running one in this area. The history of the ferry is closely linked to that of the village of Fahr. The old fishing and wine-growing village of Fahr was already a transport hub on the river Main in prehistoric and early historic times, as indicated by the two crossed oars in the village seal. The factual village name Fahr, i.e. the crossing by ferry, is also a clue to the central importance of Fahr and the early beginning of ferrying in the village. However, the ferry was first mentioned in a document on 5 September 1479.
The backlight shot was taken on a sunny winter day.
Above, for those who are interested, is a link to a video from Bavarian Television on the subject of Main ferries.
