Mein Mitbringsel zum Wochenende - My present for the weekend

During a hike this morning I could observe many small colourful butterflies, all of them of the species pearly heath (Coenonympha arcania). They are found in Central and Eastern Europe, from Northern Spain to Southern Sweden and in Southern Europe all over mainland Italy and as far as Turkey. Depending on the temperature, they live at an altitude of up to 1,800 metres. They prefer to live in sunny and open forests and at their edges and on bush covered dry grassland. The populations are declining. The butterflies usually sit with their wings closed on sunny spots. In addition, they point their wing undersides directly towards the sun and thus often sit very slanted. The photograph shown was taken with backlighting.
