A view to the southern slope of the Schwanberg in the Steigerwald with the famous vineyards shows a multitude of dead spruces. The reasons might be the repeated summer heat and dryness, but above all the bark beetle, which causes the spruce to die in Germany in an unexpected intensity and whose mass reproduction is promoted by warmth and dryness. Actually, nature strikes back in these spruce stands, because the natural tree population here was probably a mixed deciduous forest with oaks and beeches.

That's so heart-breaking. Thanks for sharing though because I wanted to see these pictures you're sharing with us. It's terrible when it's at your very home. We have a pine tree down by our road which died in the course of about 2 weeks. Bark beetle, I'm pretty sure, but the heat of the summer probably stressed the tree enough that it wasn't able to defend itself or withstand the attack. What a bummer. :(

Have a nice weekend.
Yes, nature strikes back, because the pursuit of one's own advantage ultimately does not pay off - even not here.
Impressive and well composed documentation!
