Die Gewöhnliche Waldrebe Clematis vitalba ist ein sommergrüner Kletterstrauch (Liane). Sie kann die bewachsenen Pflanzen durch ihr Gewicht und Lichtentzug bis zum Absterben schädigen. Die Pflanzenteile sind durch Protoanemonin giftig. Der Pflanzensaft reizt die Haut und führt zur Blasenbildung. Im Mittelalter entstellten sich Bettler ihre Haut mit dem Pflanzensaft, um durch ihr Aussehen Mitleid zu erregen und die Spendenfreudigkeit der Bürger zu fördern.

Clematis vitalba is a deciduous climbing shrub (liana). It can damage the overgrown plants by its weight and loss of light until it dies. The plant parts are poisonous by Protoanemonin. The plant sap irritates the skin and leads to blistering. In the Middle Ages beggars disfigured their skin with the plant sap in order to arouse compassion through their appearance and to promote the willingness of citizens to donate.
