Ein Lichtblick im Quittenwald - Light rays in the quince grove
In der Nähe von Volkach am Main werden wieder alte Quittensorten rekultiviert. In vielen Quittenwäldchen werden die Bäume gepflegt und die Früchte zu verschiedenen Produkten, wie Saft, Wein oder Gelee verarbeitet . Wandert man jetzt durch solche Quitten-Anlagen, kann man den intensiven, aromatischen Duft der reifen Früchte wahrnehmen.

Near Volkach am Main old quince varieties are being recultivated. In many quince forests the trees are cultivated and the fruits are processed into various products such as juice, wine or jelly. If you now walk through such quince plants, you can perceive the intense, aromatic scent of the ripe fruits.

Now is the season! I used to make lots of things with quince. I had quince trees in my garden.
Did you know that the Spanish name Membrillo is the origin of the English word for marmalade and originally it did refer to quince jam rather than the Seville orange preserve it was transferred to later!

Isn't this an interesting, cool picture! You are showing a fruit I have only heard of but never seen. I do not know what it smells like or what it tastes like. Fascinating to see them growing. Now I need to learn more about them because you have piqued my interest! :)

Wow, it's totally fascinating to learn about this fruit. Like you say, it's not generally eaten raw but used for many other things, and also a tree is added to apple and pear orchards ... the reason wasn't given but I guess for cross pollination?
