Walther von der Vogelweide (* 1170; † 1230 in Würzburg) was the most important Middle High German poet. His statue is part of the Frankonia fountain (1894) in front of the Würzburg Residenz.

Ich saz ûf eime steine (1190-1202)
Ich saz ûf eime steine,
und dahte bein mit beine;

wie man zer werlte solte leben:
deheinen rât kond ich gegeben, ...
My seat I had upon a stone,
With one leg o’er its fellow thrown:
My elbow thereupon I rested,
And in my hand secure had nested
My chin, and of my cheeks, the one.
I pondered long what should be done,
In order in the world to live:
Still, could not any counsel give, ...
