Der 'Pontão da Barra do Douro - Molhe Norte' ist Teil einer Reihe von Bauten an der Mündung des Douro mit dem Ziel, die Sicherheit der Schiffe zu erhöhen und die Randgebiete von Cantareira und Passeio Alegre vor Wellen und Strömungen zu schützen, wodurch der Aufwand für sog. 'Wartungsbaggerungen' verringert wird.
