Der Tempel ist dem Mahamuni-Buddha-Bild gewidmet (wörtliche Bedeutung: „Der grosse Weise“). Es wird in Burma sehr verehrt und ist für viele Menschen von zentraler Bedeutung, da es als Ausdruck der Darstellung des Lebens des Buddha angesehen wird.
