The Totem Pole was first climbed in June 1957 by Bill Feuerer, Jerry Gallwas, Mark Powell and Don Wilson. A second route called "Never Never Land" was climbed in 1979. Parts of the 1975 thriller "The Eiger Sanction" (U.S. director Clint Eastwood) were filmed at Totem Pole. According to author Ron Hogan, in addition to directing and starring in The Eiger Sanction, Clint Eastwood did all his own stunts during the mountain-climbing sequences. Eastwood and his film crew were the last people to climb Monument Valley's Totem Pole. In order to gain permission for the shoot, they had to agree to clear the mountainside of all the pitons from previous climbing expeditions.

Ich muss den unbedingt wieder mal anschauen. Leider gibt es ihn in keinem Streaming-Dienst, werde wohl die Blu Ray kaufen müssen.

Yes, the Navajo (like most other tribes) have a considerably less relaxed attitude toward non-members wandering around on the Reservation these days! Lots of the buttes and such are sacred areas to boot, and so it's _really_ desecration to be climbing them.

Btw, a yei-bi-chei is a traditional Navajo ceremony. Years ago I was privileged to attend one, thru a friend who was then teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) in Chinle. She, I, and another friend were the only Anglos there.

Must have been very impressing. Thanks for your inormations. I've read in the internet, that unfortunately many climbers ignore the prohibition and access the sites illegaly.
