Sunset Crater - 1986

Belle prise de vue rare d'un cratère !!!

Erupted about the time of the Norman Conquest. The next oldest cinder cone in the volcanic field, at least as of my information as of ca. 1980, is SP crater, maybe 40-50K years old. So it seems every few tens of thousands of years a new eruption pops off--geologic processes are leisurely! ;)

I wonder, that there is not more vegetation, as the last eruption is so long ago. Many thanks for your interesting informations!

It takes a while to develop enough soil for anything to take root! Basalt flows a few thousand years old can look as barren as though they erupted yesterday. One of the main mechanisms for soil formation is just windblown dirt, which slowly fills in the jagged surfaces, and that takes a while. Of course, once soils and plants have become established erosion proceeds faster.
