Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad
On October 12, 1948, Fidel Castro Ruz and Mirta Díaz Balart were married in this unusual Art Deco church in the center of Banes. The first wooden church was built in 1910, what we see today, was built in 1948. After their divorce in 1954, during Castro's exile in Mexico, Mirta remarried and moved to Spain. Fidel and Mirta had one son, Fidel Castro Díaz-Balart (1949–2018), called Fidelito. He was a nuclear physicist and responsible for the construction of Cuba's only nuclear power plant "Juragura", which was never finished and is now abandoned. Cuba kept free of nuclear power.

He received a wedding gift from dictator Batista, some say two alabaster lamps, some say 500 dollar. Batista was born in Banes, where the father of Mirta was mayor.
