Even Big Plants Start Small . . .
The budding inflorescence of White Butterbur (Petasites albus). The plant thrives in damp, shady locations, such as on the southern shore of Hintersteiner Sees in Tyrol (Austria). The lush leaves develop only after flowering.

Der aufkeimende Blütenstand des Weißen Pestwurz (Petasites albus). Die Pflanze gedeiht an feuchten, schattigen Standorten, wie am Südufer des Hintersteiner Sees in TIrol (Nördliche Kalkalpen). Die üppigen Blätter entwickeln sich erst nach der Blüte.

Als Laie glaubt man kaum, dass aus diesem zarten Blütenstand einmal eine große, den umgebenden Boden weit überdeckende Pflanze wird. Diese kenne ich von vielen Wanderungen. Aber den aufkeimenden Blütenstand hatte ich so noch nie gesehen.
