1st French Invasion of Portugal, Battle of Roliça, August 17, 1808 (3)

1st French Invasion of Portugal, Battle of Roliça, August 17, 1808 (3)
The Battle of Roliça, the first battle of the Peninsula War, was fought between the French troops of General Delaborde (the stronghold of the French defensive position was located at the cross' hill shown above) and the attack of the Luso-British troops under the command of Arthur Wellesley, future Duque of Wellington (came from the valley and double-involved the French stronghold). The defeated French withdraw to join the troops of General Junot, in Torres Vedras. This victory allowed that four days later the French were definitely defeated in the Battle of Vimeiro.
