EsG00 Trap Deployment

2007 Gaucin, España Moths

Folder: European
This set of Moth species were recorded during a 7-night stay near Gaucin with friends looking after the Villa whilst the owner was on a Cruise holiday. Some identifications are uncertain, but provisionally these species were given names of likely species. Any help with identification would be welcomed. Mothing results were from joint sessions with our friend Madeline. Where they are likely to b…  (read more)

EsG17 Comptosopera opocaria

17 Nov 2007 177
Geometridae, Ennominae Wingspan: 49mm. A very variable species in colour, possibly only distributed in South-western Europe. Only a small number (4) came to the trap at this site, one recorded by Madeline, and three others on our first night's trap. They were sufficiently varied to log them as different species at first, until the basic wing pattern was noted. The two other pictures here in this album are other colour variations.

EsG17 Comptosopera opocaria

17 Nov 2007 175
Geometridae, Ennominae Wingspan: 49mm. A very variable species in colour, possibly only distributed in South-western Europe. A second colour variety of this species.

EsG17 Comptosopera opocaria

17 Nov 2007 150
Geometridae, Ennominae Wingspan: 49mm. A very variable species in colour, possibly only distributed in South-western Europe. A third colour variety of this species.

EsG18 Polymixis lichenea (Feathered Ranunculus)

17 Nov 2007 287
Noctuidae, Cuculliinae Wingspan: 40mm. A common species which appears to be widespread in Europe & the UK. All records were from after we arrived. 12 were recorded on our first night's trapping, and an additional 7 were recorded through the rest of the week.

EsG19 Phlogophora meticulosa (Angle Shades)

17 Nov 2007 158
Noctuidae, Amphipyrinae Wingspan: 52mm. A widespread but sparse species throughout Europe and the UK. At rest it crumples its wings at the tips, and, together with it's colour patterns, it can easily be be mistaken for a dead leaf, particularly if amongst other leaves. Although common, it is rare to get more than one individual to light trapping sessions, and only one came in here on the 17th.

EsG20 Agrochola meridionodes

17 Nov 2007 194
Noctuidae, Xyleninae Wingspan: 34mm. Two occasional specimens came in to our trap whilst we were at the site. Not a common species here, and is not likely to be seen in the UK at all.

EsG22 Unidentified

17 Nov 2007 147
Noctuidae. Wingspan: 34mm. 3 of this species came in on our first night's trapping, but so far it has not been identified.

EsG23 Menophra japygiaria

17 Nov 2007 160
Geometridae, Ennominae Wingspan: 38mm. Two specimens of this interesting Geometrid came in on the first night of our trapping. Not a species seen in the UK, and not a common species in southern Spain.

EsG25 Palpita vitrealis

17 Nov 2007 253
Crambidae, Spilomelinae Wingspan: 35mm. A pretty almost all-white Pyralid which is widespread throughout Europe and also an occasional migrant to the UK. Worn specimens tend to lose their scales easily making the wings almost transparent. Just one arrived at our first night's trap at this site.

EsG26 Mecyna asinalis

17 Nov 2007 152
Crambidae, Spilomelinae Wingspan: 28mm. This small Pyralid has varying degrees of darkening on its pearl-grey wings. Just a single specimen arrived at our first overnight trapping session during our stay. This species is also a resident in some southern coastal areas of the UK, particularly Cornwall.

EsG27 Scopula marginepunctata (Mullein Wave)

17 Nov 2007 154
Geometridae, Sterrhinae Wingspan: 28mm. A small Geometrid which is widespread throughout Europe and the UK. Four were recorded during the week we were at Gaucin.i

EsG28 Xylocampa areola (Early Grey)

17 Nov 2007 155
Noctuidae, Cuculliinae Wingspan: 34mm. In the UK this is generally a common Spring species, so it was rather surprising to see one of these come to our trap in November. Just one was recorded here, so it may be that it was an early individual triggered to emerge early.

EsG29 Omphaloscelis lunosa (Lunar Underwing)

19 Nov 2007 204
Noctuidae, Acronictinae Wingspan: 32mm. A common UK Autumnal species, just a single came into our trap on the second trapping session at Gaucin on the 19th.

EsG30 Rhodometra sacraria (Vestal)

19 Nov 2007 167
Geometridae, Sterrhinae Wingspan: 28mm. A common species throughout Europe, which is also a prolific migrant into the UK. Just one specimen was recorded on our second trapping night on the 19th.

EsG31 Selidosema taeniolaria?

19 Nov 2007 193
Geometridae, Ennominae Wingspan: 31mm. A single specimen came in to our trap on the 19th, but it has been difficult to identify positively. The above identification is the best guess I can arrive at. This is not a species seen in the UK.

EsG32 Catarhoe basochesiata

19 Nov 2007 184
Geometridae, Larentiinae Wingspan: 32mm. A typical "Carpet" species, which seems to be recorded in France as well. Possibly a greater distribution, but because of the similarity to many other species has been less notable to record. Two specimens were recorded during our trapping sessions, the second being much darker.

EsG33 Nomophila noctuella (Rush Veneer)

19 Nov 2007 478
Crambidae, Spilomelinae Wingspan: 30mm. A widespread common Pyralid in Europe, often migrating in large numbers, some arriving along the south coastal areas of the UK. Only one appeared in our trapping sessions at this site. Although this specimen is fairly plainly coloured, many of the wing areas in some specimens are darker brown, almost black, making quite distinctive patterning.

EsG36 Udea numeralis

19 Nov 2007 187
Crambidae, Spilosomelinae Wingspan: 28mm. Another fairly non-descript Pyralid amongst many similar species, but slightly better marked wings than many. Apparently a Mediterranean species, two came in to our trapping session at this site.
