Three Jaunty Fellows, Berwick, Pennsylvania

Three Jaunty Fellows, Berwick, Pennsylvania
A photo of friends for the Vintage Photos Theme Park.

Printed on the back: "J. M. Snyder, photographist, Berwick, Pa. Duplicates can be had at any time."

Three jaunty fellows--friends with self-assured looks on their faces and cigars in their mouths--peer out at us from this nineteenth-century carte de visite photo. Checkered vests and pants must have been in vogue at the time.

John FitzGerald, Smiley Derleth, Deborah Lundbech have particularly liked this photo

hmmm Interesting. Looks like they are all wearing raincoats or "dusters" - long sleeved cotton coveralls. Also, they have rather dusty, tired looking shoes compared to their fancy togs!
They are clean shaven except for the standing man with the small neat beard, yet they all have thick hair, especially the sitting man on the left.

Thanks, Deborah! Interesting observations their clothes and appearance. I didn't know about "dusters." I have two other CDVs showing two of the three in seated poses (taken during the same photo session, I assume) but haven't had time to scan and post them.

Very interesting shot. I'm taken by the nature of the physical contact of the men that was much more common in photos that I've seen from the period after the Civil War. I like the hats. Would they be considered pork pies I wonder?

Thanks, Rick! Close male contact does seem to have been more common in earlier photos like this. I'm not sure about the pork pie hats--they certainly look similar.
