This area is the site of the spirit dance movement from 1890.

There are also rich fossil sites in the park, such as prehistoric horses, sheep, rhinos and pigs. These include 11,000 year old finds of human civilization. The area was declared a National Monument in 1939 and upgraded to a National Park in 1978.

The film Dances with Wolves, starring Kevin Costner, was shot in 1990 for the most part in and around the national park.
