MN1116 DARLINGFORD - [RAILWAY AVENUE STORES AND DEPOT]

MN1116 DARLINGFORD - [RAILWAY AVENUE STORES AND DEPOT]
POSTCARD

Date: Posted August 9, 1907 from Darlingford, Man. to Mrs. D. L. Fraser in Old Orchard, Maine.

Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified

Notation: I just love the "feel" of this photograph.Nothing pretentious about the scene. As far as I can tell, it shows the railway depot/station on the north side of the tracks (right side of the image) and commercial buildings on the north side of Railway Avenue (left side of the image). The building on the extreme left is The Empire (Hotel?) The third building to the right of it, and above the white awning, there is a sign that appears to read "Wilsons Drug Store". Sadly, the signs on the other buildings are not quite legible.

The note on the reverse reads; "Received your letter to-day, also one from Don. Am glad you are feeling better & that Bressie is well. Remind her she promised to write me a letter while I was away. Ella hasn't got back from (??) yet... What do you think of this for a town the cross is over Colemans store. Clarence came down Saturday and stayed till Wed. to see us. with love from Maud."

That looks like it might be by the pseudo-Bates - the lettering is very similar to Bates' but I'm not sure it's his because the date is early. I have a similar pseudo-Bates card (I believe dated 1906) and what's interesting is that it's from Thornhill, which was the next town down the line, between Darlingford and Morden (it barely exists anymore). So the pseudo-Bates seems to have been operating in that area. At least this gives us more lettering to compare to Bates' lettering, although I would think that it is someone else despite the similarity.
