POSTCARD

Date: Posted April 6, 1914.

Publisher / Photographer: Meyers Photo.

Notation: A great early view looking north up Princess Street - with the backside of the Walker Theatre on the right. Sadly, this backside view in the only image that I have seen in a postcard view of the Walker.

Happily, both the large building on the right, the Bell Block and the building just north of the Walker, the Peck Building, are both still standing in 2016.

It's actually interesting that there are so few images of theatres, given their number, interesting appearance and importance in day-to-day life back then. I have one by Lyall of the exterior of the Orpheum and ... I can't think of any others. For example, there are dozens of postcards showing the Winnipeg Theatre burning down, but I haven't seen one showing it prior to that. I wonder if making postcards like that was frowned on if permission hadn't been granted?

That is an interesting theory, about permission being needed.
