Die Purpur-Magnolie (Magnolia liliiflora) stammt aus China. Einerseits wurde sie dort schon seit langer Zeit als Zierpflanze kultiviert und verbreitet, andererseits ihr natürlicher Lebensraum durch menschliche Landnutzung stark eingeschränkt. Ihre ursprüngliche Verbreitung ist unklar. Zahlreiche heutige Vorkommen stammen von kultivierten Pflanzen ab.
