Hánefsstaðir fence

This fence belongs to the only working farm left this side of Seyðisfjörður which like all of the East Fjords has been plagued by rural depopulation.

Der Zaun gehört zum letzten verbliebenen Hof auf dieser Seite des Fjords. Seyðisfjörður leidet wie die übrigen Ostfjorde massiv unter Landflucht .

Does the farmer own the narrow strip of land on the opposite side of the fjord? There seems to be some signs of cultivation.

Thanks a lot, Amelia! No, this belongs to others farms, there are a few on the opposite side. It would mean a 20km detour to get there by car, or they'd have to take a boat, not very practical when rounding up sheep or cattle (this farmer has the only herd of cows in the fjord).

Ich vermute, dass es Treibholz ist. An den Stränden im Norden Islands wird jede Menge sibirisches Treibholz angeschwemmt. Heute liegt es dekorativ rum, früher wurde alles gesammelt und verbaut. Aber über die Berge im Tal wächst sogar echter Wald, auch wenn er meist nicht höher als 1m ist;-)

It's marginal farmland all over Iceland, just hay meadows, because the growing season is too short. Some cattle, lots of sheep and horses... In areas with geothermal energy they grow vegetables and fruit in glasshouses, though.

Beautiful landscape Gudrun. That fence doesn't look like it would keep livestock in (or out), but it does make good foreground interest and the stream makes a good lead-in to the image. Love the low clouds too
