Stóra Dímon and Eyjafjallajökull

Stóra Dímon and Eyjafjallajökull
Markarfljót valley and western side of Eyjafjallajökull seen from the Ring Road. Stóra Dímon is the rock in the middle.

Wir hatten total Glück, oft hängt hier die Suppe drin und man sieht nichts von den Vulkanen...

A beautifully cropped image with a dramatic sky.

Thanks a lot, Dave! The best thing about the sky was that you could actually see the mountain tops:-)

This is a lot more than we got to see of Eyafjallajökull than we did in the brief time we were there - too cloudy, so all we got was a silvery streak off in the distance. Excellent shot.

Many thanks, rdhinmn!
Our guide told us to have a good look because it is rare to see all the mountains- Hekla was visible too!

After seing your Iceland serie - I am not sure if I want to go there with bicycle. NZ was a bit tougher than northern Norway and Lofoten (what a surprise!)... but this country looks like a real challange. Bikers maturity or high school grade. Did you meet some bikers there?

Actually, we saw quite a few bikers, especially on the highland roads- but it is very tough! In bad weather you get rain that drenches everything. Wind can also be extreme. In fine weather there are often sand storms (ash storms) in the highlands and after long sunshine the rivers are high and fords can become impassable.

Icelanders are a tough lot- it's in their genetic makeup- but they prefer superjeeps to bikes;-)
