Nikon D40 + Nikkor AF-S 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 VR lens. Using this lens at full stretch in combination with a D40 provides the full-frame equivalent of 450mm focal length.

your long lens photos are reminding me that i'm starting to think i should use one. i like details of things and not unfrequently see them in the distance. i don't however, like using zoom lenses very much (though your use of the 70-300mm lens may sway me). do you find you tend to use one of the mm settings on the zoom more than others?

I got the Nikon 70-300 because the Tamron 70-210 f/2.8 which I had bought for a song was, despite being capable, uncomfortably heavy on a day's trudge. Thus I got almost another 100mm of reach and VR to compensate for the slow speed of the lens. Although I use it all over its range of focal lengths, I notice that often I am at the maximum reach.
