I have isolated and elongated the statue of the soldier and over-exposed the figure to suggest mist.
I remain to be convinced that there is any glory in being killed on a battlefield. Perhaps the word is used in an attempt to help the bereaved.

"A bloody great balls-up" would fit equally well.

The manipulated image works in a haunting way: the soldier seems to recede and ascend into the misty light.
