Litter on a Grave

Litter on a Grave
Seen abandoned on a grave in the churchyard of Edington Priory Church. The biro looks like the type available in betting shops. The wooden cross seems to be an orphan from the regular November event. We live in a throwaway, don't tidy up society, where totems and memorabilia have replaced quiet reflection.

I like the contrasting symbols: betting shop pen and cross. I have a fondness for those discarded little pale blue pens, which always bring to my mind some wonderful characters I've known. Betting seems a lifeline of hope for many people, so I try not to scoff at it...I suppose it's the same with Christianity too....But I never buy a lottery ticket, never back a Grand National horse, and never say my prayers. Well, I suppose I do place my bet on Art to give me some return. Spin the wheel.

If I won the lottery - which is improbable for several reasons, not least that I never buy a ticket - I would establish and finance a Campaign to Prevent the State from Promoting False Hope Through Gambling.
