Tiller Girl (B&W)

Tiller Girl (B&W)
Kennet and Avon Canal, Wiltshire.

John Tiller invented precision dancing in 1890. The dancers linked arms and kept strictly synchronised routines, often including high kicks.

All canal narrowboats are steered by a rudder connected to a tiller. It looks easy but it takes practice and a good eye to anticipate the necessary adjustment.

This girl was manoeuvring her boat into position to enter a lock. She did it with aplomb. 'Aplomb' is an unusual word. It is, however, easier to spell than 'manoeuvring'. Words derived from French can be challenging to spell correctly.

Canon EOS 40D.

The only time I tried to steer a narrowboat I kept crashing it into the bank. I blamed the strong side-wind.

It is more likely the fault of the banks. They have got us all into a lot of trouble. I doubt you are in any way to blame.

I do feel responsible. I try to send as much money as I can to help that nice Mr. Cameron save those poor banks.
