This one is, as much as for the usual deserving, for poor Norman Finkelstein, who’s in the soup again and this time not for opening his big mouth and telling it as it is. Stay stubborn Norman!

Somehow, even if the Balfour Declaration had never been made, there still would have been the same violence in the Middle East when one looks at the enmity between Persians and Arabs and Shi'ites and Sunnis. The rejection of Jews and Christians as well intolerance towards and persecution of people who are different such as the LGBT community are further manifestations of unacceptable hatred and ethnic cleansing in the Middle East. With re: to the Balfour Declaration, namely Israel and Palestine, one can only hope the two peoples eventually recognize their historical right to the same area, learn to share the land and live in peace. With re: to the broader picture, one can only hope people in the Middle East come to embrace religious tolerance and diversity and learn to respect human rights for all regardless of individuality.

Not much to disagree with your your first point, William, except for the extent and the virulence of the said violence, made so very much worse by Western meddling.
As to the possible peace between Israel and the Palestinians -what's left of them, I fear pigs will fly before it happens. As far as I can tell, according to whatever history I know, past and recent, Israel will not rest until the last Palestinian is pushing up daisies. And even then... They do have a loopy dream-plan for a Greater Israel, you know. (Not making this up either; it's fairly well documented, if not widely admitted.)
Re. tolerance. I'm all for it, mostly (though I don't extend it to the likes of Henry Kissinger and Warren Buffett and them of that ilk!) And I'd love to see the West embrace tolerance for diversity, also, which is something I see less and less of, lately. Trump and his pals ain't helping either, worse luck.
Many thanks for the presence and the conversation, me old china!. Dialogue is also becoming a rara avis, these days.

Sadly I'm not optimistic either that peace will be achieved that will be fair to all sides nor tolerance can one day flourish where each person is respected and their life valued.

I'm not optimist either, alas & woe. But that's no reason to pout. Or despair. As Gramsci advocated: Pessimism of the mind and optimism of the will! Have a grand weekend, dear.
