The first mentioned news of Espunyola date from the 10th century. In 950, countess Adelaida, daughter of the counts of Barcelona, donated the alou de l'Espunyola to the monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses.

The single-nave Romanesque church has fairly thick walls and a semi-circular apse.
