Pals - Sant Pere

Pals - Sant Pere
The medieval old town built on a hill was bombed and completely destroyed by Francoist troops during the Spanish Civil War. In 1950 the reconstruction of the town began, which gradually developed into a tourist attraction.

A church already existed here in the 9th century. In 1202 Gilabert de Cruïlles paid tribute to the Bishop of Girona for the parish of "Sancti Petri de Pals". The church was badly damaged during the civil war (1462-1472), so in 1478, King John II gave permission to use the ruined castle stones to build and repair the church of Sant Pere de Pals. Sant Pere is a Gothic church that retains some elements of the earlier Romanesque church.
