Saint-Paulien - Saint-Georges

Saint-Paulien - Saint-Georges
Saint-Paulien was a settlement of the "Velavi" in Roman times. It was an important town and even hold the bishopric, before it was moved to Le Puy. The very first bishop in Le Puy was a disciple of Saint Font, the missionay of the Gauls. His name was Georges - and the church in Saint-Paulien is probably dedicated to the Saint "Georges du Velay".

The church was erected within the 12th century and got remodeled about 400 years later. A very typical feature for churches in the Auvergne area is, that differently coloured stones were used, creating a kind of polychromy.

Unfortunately the church was locked.
