Cologne - Underground

Cologne - Underground
Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior".

At that time the Roman city had a population of about 20.000 and in 80 AD the "Eifel Aqueduct" a water supply was built. This aqueduct, one of the longest aqueducts of the Roman Empire, delivered 20.000 m³ of water to the city every day.

The inner city of Cologne is completely built above Roman ruins and in some parts, the visitor can walk through the still existing underground sections of the aqueduct.
