Detmold - Olivier Grossetête

Detmold - Olivier Grossetête
Detmold was the capital of the Principality of Lippe from 1468 until 1918 and then capital of the Free State of Lippe until 1947, when Lippe was incorporated into the new German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Detmold has a population of about 75.000, the "Hochschule für Musik Detmold" ("University of Music Detmold") and since 1992 hosts a European Festival for Street Theater, named "Bildstörung", that is held every second year over the long pentecostal weekend.

One of the main tourist spots near Detmold is the "Hermannsdenkmal", commemorating the Cherusci war chief Arminius (= Hermann) and the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in which the Germanic warriors defeated the Roman legions under Varus in 9 AD. The momument was erected by Ernst von Bandel between 1836 (first drafts) and 1875 (inauguration).

French artist Olivier Grossetête did a workshop for volunteers in Detmold and erected, supported by them, the "Hermannsdenkmal" from cardboard and ducts tape in front of the Detmold theater. Only the martial statue on top of the original was changed - and it was smaller. The original reaches about 53 meters, the cardboard version "only" reached aboiut 20 meters.

This was a main attraction..
