Repairing the Gates

Repairing the Gates
Grand Union Canal North Lock No. 42 Frog Island Leicester
Taken with a Kodak 66 II possibly Agfa CT18 Friday October 4th 1963 f6.3 1/75
Look at the workmen at the far gate not a hard hat or high viz jacket to be seen
The buildings on the left have all been cleared for re-development the ones on the right are exactly the same except they have been vandalised by the spray painters the usual mindless rubbish if they had any painting skill they could have recorded the industrial history of the area there was a lot mainly textile related, the canal was very important

Very different working rules in 1963 Peter. There weren't many! An excellent picture from your archives. A shame about the tagging on the buildings. They look good in this shot. I took a few pictures of the restoration of the Kennet and Avon canal in the mid to late '70's, as I lived near Devizes.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Good weather today down here.

I should go and take a now shot, I would have liked to see how they got the wood for the temporary barrier in place it looks as if it is slotted into the lock side

Salud Peter.

A photo as a testimony of history. It looks almost like an archaeological site.

I like the way the crane barge was grounded during the work. Work sites weren't fenced off back then either & I'm sure anyone could walk along the canal during the repairs.
