The oldest parts of the clock (the wooden frame and the parts painted black) were built about 1450 it didn't have a face but chimed every half-hour so that the monks at Peterborough Abbey knew when it was time to pray. It was in use in the bell tower until 1950 when and electronic device replaced it, after restoration it was moved to it present position in 1984 it's in working order

By weights the blue pendulum was later addition to make it more accurate, many of the Grandfather or Long Case clocks here are driven by weights, I have a replica wall clock that is driven by a weight

An interesting picture Peter. It looks amazing. I was always fascinated by the clock workings on show inside Shrewsbury's old market building, but I am not sure it they were connected to a working clock on the building or just on show.
