Wonderful views - including Mam Tor - from the Castle grounds, well worth what I consider to be the exceptionally steep climb up the path !
This Norman castle was first built soon after 1066, and was greatly strengthened by Henry II after 1155, which included building the Keep. The castle served as the "administrative" centre for the local area. By the 16th century it was described as ruinous [it would have been a readily available source of building stone]. Some well-meaning people did various repairs during the 19th century, which due to the methods and lack of records have caused confusion in modern times - with some material completely removed and others stones replaced & sometimes now fixed in the "wrong" place.
The site is presently in the care of English Heritage.
