A reconstruction of Zhoukoudian showing a group fashioning tools of Bamboo and quartzite, and cooking meat on a fire. In the background dangerous hyenas are being driven away – it seems likely that humans and hyenas regularly competed both for shelter and food. Recent research has cast donut on the extent of human fire use at Zhoukoudian however.
