On the hill above the city lay the puma’s head, Sacsayhuaman. It is the largest magalithic structure ever erected in the Western Hemisphere. Built in the famous Inca polygonal style of stonework, its outer walls contain individual blocks that weigh as much as 100 tons. The center of the complex consists of three concentric zigzag walls enclosing prominence on which three towers were erected. Two of these were square and between them was a circular tower. To the north of these structures is a vast complex of ruins showing that there were once many more buildings and structures of a wide variety of shapes, both rectangular and circular. There were many fountains and canals in this area, as well as many carved ‘huaca’ stones. The function of Sacsayhuaman has been debated for years. There was a battle fought there during the Inca siege of Cuzco as they resisted the forces of Pizarro. The Spaniards therefore thought of the structure as a fortress. Although it may have once served as a fortress and did so during the battle, its function at the height of the empire when the empire felt no threat to the capital, was surely much more complex. It was likely the site of temples and religious shrines of various cults and residences of the Incas. The functions of many of the buildings and architectural monuments of the Inca capital are just beginning to be understood. ` Page 76
