The rigors of the maritime-oasis environment made specialization mandatory. Costal-dwelling fishermen requires specialized tools to obtain their livelihood. They grew certain specific plants such as reeds for boat building, cotton for making fishing nets, and gourds for net floats that allowed them to efficiently harvest marine life. The wide variety of marine animals also encouraged specialization in specific production such as shellfish, anchovies, large fish, or sea mammals. ~ Page 86
