Great Central Railway Quorn Leicestershire 5th July 2023

Great Central Railway Quorn Leicestershire 5th July 2023
We were clearing the lineside at Quorn when BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 92214 passed on the 10.00 service.

The family footplate team of Les & Pete were in charge of the 9F in the morning and gave us a wave. On the afternoon shift I had the pleasure to fire 92214 on the 14.00 train.

Not the best resolution because it's a screen grab from my video.

Marco F. Delminho, ColRam, Nouchetdu38, Percy Schramm and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

Does the loco have two more injectors on the other side?

No, on the BR standards both are on the fireman's side which is very convenient.

Ok. Yes that would be better.

Compare that to the situation on the "Double Fairlie" on the Festiniog [Nth Wales, 2ft narrow-gauge] where - historically - both injectors were on the driver's side and the boiler comes between the footplate crew.

Now that's just plain silly!

Well, Fairley silly. (Someone had to say it). :-)

The explanation is that, historically, the FR's firemen were more usually "boys" and regarded as less skilled, so it was part of the driver's job to maintain water levels in the boiler.

Happy people, quite like the 9F design --- but it is way, way bigger than my normal steeds.
