Saltom Pit

Saltom Pit
Located at the base of cliffs near Whitehaven, The winding enginehouse of 1782 and chimney base are all that remains of Saltom Pit. The capped shaft is to the left of the Engine house. The mine operated from 1729 to 1848 and workings extended under the Irish Sea over a mile from the shore. It is reputed to be the first mine in the UK to extract coal under the sea. The mine reached a depth of 456ft by 1732.

The site is now a scheduled ancient monument.
